Leash pulling can turn a simple walk into a fight. For some owners it is annoying. For others it is unsafe. The first thing to understand is simple: dogs pull because pulling often works.

Stop Letting Pulling Pay

If the leash is tight and the dog still gets to move forward, pulling is being rewarded. Stop, change direction, or reset when the dog pulls.

Teach Attention First

Loose leash walking is about more than the leash. Your dog needs to understand that paying attention to you matters.

Start Somewhere Easy

Do not start leash training in the hardest environment. Begin somewhere quiet, then slowly add distractions.

Reward the Position You Want

If you want your dog near your side, reward your dog near your side. Reward placement matters.

Stay Consistent

Everyone walking the dog should follow the same rules. If pulling works sometimes, the dog will keep trying it.
